A Testimonial

After a very special surprise for a 50 year old whose hubby gave her what she’d always wanted – to drive a steam train – we got this lovely letter:
On the 4th of July, in order to celebrate my 50th Birthday, my husband, along with the most helpful members of your Society, conspired to fulfil my long-term dream of driving a Steam Train.Every aspect of this event was kept in the strictest of confidence and I had no idea of what was to unfold. It began with an early drive to Sheffield, where I was outfitted with my uniform. From there we proceeded to the railway yard, where I was informed that this would be a hands-on experience. Hands-on it certainly was, from Lighting the Krause Engine, and keeping the fire burning, to polishing the brass and oiling, oh!.. so many parts. But this was only the beginning of the adventure, once the engine was up to pressure, we took her for a run up to Victoria Station and then, (under Graeme’s watchful eye) I drove the train back to Redwater Creek Station. Driving the Krause was an awesome experience, and I am still finding it hard to fathom how much power can be generated,  just through steam! Arriving at the Station, I was amazed at the size of the crowd that had gathered there, but once the haze of the smoke cleared I was able to make out individual faces.  I realised that my husband had chartered a bus and dragged 35 of my nearest and dearest all the way up to Sheffield to help me celebrate this event. Our party then set off on a couple of rides on “my train” (just for a little while) followed by coffee in the Station and a great, fun time was had by all.I would personally and most sincerely like to thank the Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society and in particular Peter who is an absolute star in his knowledge and workings of “all things” Steam Train. I would also like to thank Graeme who made sure we all stayed safe and that I didn’t blow anything up or go too fast with the Engine! Kind thanks also to Judy and Graham who manned the Station and put up with everyone’s most urgent requests for warm drinks and snacks on the day!
So if anyone is ever looking for a most wonderful and unique way to celebrate a special occasion, then don’t miss this opportunity to do something not so ordinary. It is a very special chance to reconnect with a by-gone era, and have a very small glimpse into a world that was very different from today. Also it is a great way to help support the volunteers who give so much of their time to help preserve our past so that we can appreciate it long into the future. After all……….“How many people do you know that can say that they have driven a Steam train?”
With heartfelt thanks and appreciation
